Foot reflexology is a truly holistic treatment. The therapist uses massage and stimulation across only the feet to treat the whole body.
How does it work?
There are interconnections and reflexes in the feet that directly correspond with organs, glands, and parts of the body. The right foot reflects the organs and body parts that exist in the right side of the body and the left foot reflects those in the left side. Organs that are found on both sides of the body, such as the lungs, are similarly reflected on each foot.
Illustrations of people receiving treatment on the feet have been found in ancient texts from China, Japan, Russia, and Egypt. The ‘modern’ reflexology system dates back to 1917. Dr W H Fitzgerald discovered that he could relieve pain in the body by working the corresponding zone in the feet or hands. He created his theory of Zone Therapy, which consisted of 5 zones on each foot that mapped to zones along each side of the body.
Later, American physiotherapist Eunice Ingham extended the zone theory by mapping specific parts of the body on to the feet.
This is the map that most practitioners work to today.
Though we work only on the feet, the areas that are stimulated trigger physiological changes in the corresponding areas of the client’s body. There are over 7000 nerve endings across both feet that connect directly to our organs and glands. Circulatory, respiratory, and lymphatic systems are stimulated, aches and pains around the skeletal system are eased, and the endocrine (hormone) system is balanced.
This is a deeply relaxing treatment, which in itself is beneficial for the wellbeing of your body and mind.
